Oliver Stone Drops His First ‘Snowden’ Bomb

Vietnam veteran, Platoon director and noted conspiracy theorist Oliver Stone has begun production on Snowden, his new biopic of the man who leaked classified NSA documents to journalist Glenn Greenwald and filmmaker Laura Poitras (who directed the Oscar-winning documentary Citizenfour). Stone calls Edward Snowden “an ordinary man who unquestioningly served his country” and drives his point home with the above image from the movie, showing Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper, Inception, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra) as Snowden during his time in the Army Reserve.

Wait, what?  Apparently Snowden served just five months in the Army Reserve back in 2004 but Stone looks like he wants to make sure his point about the leaker’s patriotism is clear from the start. It’s Oliver Stone, the guy who made JFK, W. and The Untold History of the United States. Did you think he’d be taking shots at the guy, did you?

Snowden also stars Shailene Woodley as Snowden’s girlfriend Lindsay Mills, Melissa Leo as Laura Poitras, Zachary Quinto as Glenn Greenwald, Tom Wilkinson as Guardian journalist Ewan MacAskill and Nicolas Cage as an as-yet unnamed U.S. intelligence officer. The movie will be released December 25th, just in time for next year’s Oscar season.
